I was inducted as a Trustee of the BRJC Parsi High School in 1919 at the tender age of 22 yrs, by my father Mr. Noshir Chenoy. It was during my first year as Trustee that the momentous decision was taken to throw the school doors open to members of all communities as the Parsi students had dwindled to a miniscule number. The initial response to the throwing open of the doors was not very encouraging but the numbers steadily grew along with the reputation of the school. The school has grown from the initial 50/60 children to the current strength of approximately a 1000 students. But several hurdles were encountered and overcome along the way. As the numbers of students grew, so did the need for more classrooms, more faculty and more facilities. In 1995, the old school building was torn down and a new, more spacious and larger facility was constructed. The school was also upgraded from Middle School (for which the recognition was obtained during the rule of the Nizam), to High School. The Principals at the time Miss. Bapooji and Mrs. Baria worked tirelessly and selflessly to achieve this objective. The years have flown by and it is hard to imagine that my association with the school in now in its 66 th year. While I am happy with what has been achieved, there is much more that can be done and WILL BE DONE.

‘Education is the wise, hopeful and respectful cultivation of learning undertaken in the belief that all should have the change to share in life’ The Moto of the Parsi School is “ TRUTH, LABOUR, SERVICE”

Parsi Philanthropy has been predominant in two areas – Education and Healthcare. These two are essential components of a happy, healthy and purposeful society. In the early 1900s, members of the affluent Chenoy family of Secunderabad understood that wealth created is meaningfully utilized for the betterment of society, and they set up various institutions that would serve their fellow community members. Seth Eduljee Chenai helped establish the Chenai Parsi Fire Temple and the Dharamsala and set up many other charities. Amongst his illustrious grandsons was the unassuming, kind and generous – hearted Jehangirji Jamshedji Chenai, who believed that ‘education’ would provide a chance to all to share the fruits of a good life and that would be the key to the future success of the community. So, in memory of his wife, he established the Bai Ratanbai Jehangirji Parsi Elementary School on Roj Khorshed, Mah Amardad, Y.Z. 1288 (January,19, 1919). Even in those early times, Jehangirji had realized the value of ‘girls’ education’ and the school provided for an inclusive education in a co-educational environment.

For more than five decades the BRJC Parsi School remained the first schooling option for Parsi families of the twin cities of Hyderabad and Secunderabad, which at the time were a part of the Nizam’s domain. The curriculum provided for a healthy mix of religious learning along with subjects like History, Geography, Economics, Logic and the Languages –English, Gujarati and Urdu. In 1933 the school upgraded to a Middle School and in 1974/75 it gained recognition as a High School affiliated to the State Board of Secondary Education, Andhra Pradesh.

During the early years of the school, with Faramroze Hirji Khurshed as the Head Master from 1952 -1919, the emphasis was on discipline, a sound foundation of religious and cultural education, coupled with modern learning. Most of the staff comprised lady teachers with the known exceptions being Mehtaji who taught mathematics and Gujarati and Shamsuddin Saheb who taught Urdu. The school put up annual plays (nataks) that were musicals based on stories from the shahnameh and scripted and composed by the HM Parsi Seths and their families, community members and parents of the students were invited to these treats only to leave at the end of the evening with emotions running high and hearts chastened.

Even in those days, excursions to various cities in India formed a part of the curriculum, because it was believed that travelling complemented education.

Principal's Message

Dear Parents,

I wish to extend a warm welcome to you all into this academic year 2022-23. This centenarian institution has been serving the economically under privileged children by providing quality education at the most affordable fee and also scholarships for deserving students which are given by management.
You have been noticed how privileged the children who studied in this institution are. They not only get quality academics but also sound training in Value Education and Life Skills through the co-curricular activities like NCC and Scouts & Guides.
Your child gets an exposure to the best Teaching-Learning Experience because we believe in Experimental Learning. The child has to perform exp, participate in online classes arranged by Tata Class Edge (TCE) digital boards and learn through self-reading in the library in addition to the course text books and regular classroom teaching. This gives the child an opportunity to comprehend the concepts and learn them thoroughly. The regular games & sports and extra-curricular activities contribute to the total all-round development of the student.
I would like to congratulate all the parents and students for the effort and cooperation rendered by you for the academic year 2021-2022.

“Education is the mother of leadership” Wendell Willkie

Wishing you all and your children the very best for the coming year,

Yours sincerely,
T. VISHNUVARDHANA CHARY
